“The ability to make informed decisions and to interpret and apply mathematics in a variety of contexts is an essential component of students’ preparation for life in the 21st century.” (Mathematics K-10 Syllabus, p.13)
This Key Learning Area of study is informed by the NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum Mathematics K–6.
The Mathematics K – 6 Syllabus is organised into four strands – one process strand, Working Mathematically, and the three content strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement & Geometry, and Statistics & Probability. Working mathematically encompasses processes that are embedded into the other three strands through the content.
Each year students from Years K-6 participate in a one-on-one Mathematics Assessment Interview with their teacher in order to obtain information about students’ strengths and challenges in the areas of place value, counting, addition & subtraction and multiplication & division. This information enables teachers to meet learners at their point of need and to build upon Number skills that are fundamental to learning new concepts.
